When is the Right Timeto Sell Your GPU?

5 min read · Updated 2025 · Singapore
Most people sell their GPU too late. They wait until a new card is already out, prices have dropped, and every other owner is trying to sell at the same time. By then, you’ve left hundreds of dollars on the table.
Timing your GPU sale is one of the easiest ways to get significantly more money — and it doesn’t require any technical knowledge. Just an understanding of how GPU value moves over time.
The depreciation curve
How GPU value drops over time
GPU value follows a predictable pattern. Understanding it tells you exactly when to sell.
Month 0–6
100%

Launch — peak value

New card just released. Used prices of the previous generation hold firm as people wait. Don’t sell here — supply is low, so hold on a little longer.

Month 6–12
85–90%

Sweet spot — sell now

This is the best time to sell. New card hype is building but your card still commands strong used prices. Buyers who can’t afford new are actively looking.

Year 1–2
60–75%

New generation drops — value falls

Next gen card launches. Everyone rushes to sell the old gen at once. Supply floods the market and prices drop fast. Don’t wait until here if you can help it.

Year 2+
30–50%

Floor — diminishing returns

Card is now two generations old. Value stabilises but low. Still sellable but you’ve lost significant value. Best to have sold 12 months earlier.

Reading the signals
Sell now vs wait — the signs
Sell

New generation announced

The moment Nvidia or AMD announces the next series, your card’s value starts dropping. Don’t wait for the reviews — list it now while buyers are still buying the current gen.

Sell

You’ve had it 12–18 months

Peak depreciation window. You’ve had good use out of it and the card still commands a strong used price. Ideal time to upgrade and recoup the most value.

Sell

Your card is struggling with new titles

If you’re dropping settings or playing below 60fps in new releases, the market still values your card more than your gaming experience does. Sell before performance perception catches up to price.

Hold

New gen just launched and prices are inflated

Right after a new GPU launch, used prices of the old gen sometimes spike temporarily as stock-hunters look for alternatives. Wait 2–3 months for the market to settle before selling.

Hold

Your card is under 6 months old

Too early — you’ve barely absorbed any use from the card and first-year depreciation is steep. Unless you need the cash, hold until the 12-month mark.

Before you sell
How to prepare your GPU for sale
01

Clean it

Compressed air through the fans and heatsink. A dusty GPU signals poor maintenance to buyers and reduces your offer.

02

Find the original box

Original packaging adds S$30–50 to your offer at most buyback shops. Worth digging out of storage.

03

Know your mining history honestly

If the card was used for mining, say so upfront. Shops will test it anyway — being upfront builds trust and avoids wasted trips.

04

Get a quote before you visit

WhatsApp the model and a photo first. A reputable shop will give you a rough estimate so you’re not making the trip blind.
